Spacey Reading

Back Up Next

So, you say you'd like to sit and read a good book by a roaring fire? Why notPremiere January 2001 - article on actors/movies that .. well .. laid an egg. This is Kevin as a teacher in Pay It Forward. read something Spacey? Kevin enjoys reading to calm his frazzled nerves at the end of the day. There are many things you can buy, or get at the library to expand your mind while allowing you to feel a close connection to the Spaceman at the same time. Here are some Spacey selections:

Seven by Richard Dyer

Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy, Wrath. Describes Kevin's fans to a "T", doesn't it?

Seven by Nick Lacey

Behind the Scenes with Seven.

Glengarry Glen Ross: A Play by David Mamet

Bringing Down The House by Ben Mezrich

Now in paperback. Kevin's Triggerstreet Productions is set to turn this true story into a film. Kevin will have a role in the film.

Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee by Dodd Darin with Maxine Paetro

This can be hard to find as a new book. It's hardcover and out-of-print. Can often be found as a used book. Try the library or one of the online auction places. Amazing story and I can see why Kevin wants to portray Bobby. While you're reading that, you might want to watch a VHS or DVD of an old TV special from the 1970s. It's called Bobby Darin - Mack Is Back! It was an NBC special in a concert type form. Or lounge act form, I guess is more accurate. I could see some Kevin Spacey in Bobby Darin. Or maybe I see some  Darin in Kevin. There is also an extra documentary about Bobby on the DVD which I assume is on the VHS.

You can find out more about Bobby Darin here.

The Life of David Gale by Dewey Gram

If you  haven't seen the movie yet,  you can read the book based on the screenplay and use your imagination. Movie tie-in edition with Kevin on the cover. Paperback. I saw this at Barnes & Noble.

The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx

Kevin is Quoyle, a man who returns to his roots to raise his children. (Er, in the book.)

K-PAX
A Novel By Gene Brewer

HE CALLS HIMSELF PROT.  IS HE A MAN, ALIEN...OR SAVIOR?

Psychiatrist Gene Brewer doesn't have a diagnosis for the mysterious new patient who calls himself "prot" (rhymes with goat). But this strange and likeable man cannot be as he claims - from the planet K-PAX. Or can he?

Can be found now in hardcover, paperback and audio. A paperback cover featuring Kevin and Jeff Bridges was released alongside the film.

On a Beam of Light
by Gene Bewer

The return of prot.  Sequel to K-PAX, part of a three part trilogy. Hardcover and paperback.

L.A. Confidential by James Ellroy

L.A. Confidential by Manohla Dargis (BFI Modern Classics)

L.A. Confidential: The Screenplay by Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson, Based on work by James Ellroy

Great book! Contains some nice b/w pictures. A few of Kevin. Great to have with you as a reference book when watching the movie in case you get lost in the story somewhere. A personal review of the book at barnesandnoble.com calls it L.A. Confidential For Dummies since it's easier to understand than the original novel. Had some nice b/w pictures of Kevin in it too. Did I say that already?

American Beauty - The Screenplay by Alan Ball

Haven't read it. But I hear it has b/w pictures.

American Beauty -The official "original" screenplay by Alan Ball.

Is *this* the version Kevin says Steven Spielberg read and immediately wanted to produce while making not one single change to the script at all? Contains the deleted scenes that explained the whole thing. Used to be found on eBay.

Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde

You've seen the movie, now read the book.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

Read the book before you see the movie, sport.

More Than Mercer House: Savannah's Jim Williams & His Southern Houses by Dorothy Williams Kingery

This lovely book is about the efforts by Jim Williams to restore old homes. There is a section about Mercer House, which includes photographs of Kevin from a party at the house in 1997. Photos are in my MGGE section.

Give Me My Father's Body: The Life of Minik, the New York Eskimo by Kenn Harper, Foreward by Kevin Spacey

This is currently available in hardcover, but was expected to be released in paperback in March 2001. Kevin purchased the film rights to this real story and has said he wishes to film it himself. Don't know if that means directing or acting in it. Kevin wrote the forward to the book.

Ordinary Decent Criminal - The novel by Gretta Curran Browne

This is a novel form of the movie. Fun reading. If you haven't seen the movie, try to find the book. It's from Ireland and I found it on eBay about 5 years ago.

Kevin recommends ...

In Esquire - UK, March 2002: One Day in September and The New Jackals, both by Esquire writer Simon Reeve.

~

So you say you don't want to be bothered with reading? How about listening to Kevin read instead? Kevin can be found on several audio books. They can usually be found at online book sellers or auctions sites such as eBay. Great for when you're on long car trips or on a plane.
